Headless Shopware: ship a Next.js storefront with a Shopware 6.7 brain.
Migrate from a slow Shopware Storefront theme to a Next.js storefront keeping Shopware 6.7 as the headless backend. Sub-2-second LCP, BFSG-compliant theme, BFSG-ready checkout, content via PWA Storefront API.
What Shopware merchants actually face
- 1Shopware Storefront theme is slow. LCP often 4-7 seconds on real mobile. Conversion rate visibly correlates with site speed.
- 2BFSG enforcement: 28 June 2025. Most Shopware themes ship a checkout flow that fails WCAG 2.2 AA on at least 8 criteria.
- 3Custom blocks and content take a week to ship. Marketing wants a landing page; engineering says 'sprint, sometime'.
- 4B2B catalogs with 10K+ SKUs choke the standard storefront. Headless lets you cache aggressively at the edge.
Four components for a sound headless migration
01
Next.js storefront
App Router, ISR for product pages, edge cache via Vercel. LCP < 2s consistent. Hydration only where needed.
02
Shopware 6.7 backend
Stays as commerce engine. Catalog, cart, customer, order, payment all unchanged. Only the frontend is replaced.
03
BFSG-konformer Checkout
WCAG 2.2 AA on every step. Field labels, focus management, error announcements via aria-live. Real keyboard-only flow.
04
Content surface
Sanity / Payload / Storyblok for marketing content. Editors ship landing pages without engineering. Product pages remain Shopware-managed.

Headless Shopware — frequently asked questions
Why not keep the Shopware Storefront theme?+
If your business is small enough that Storefront performance is acceptable, do that — headless is overkill below ~5,000 €/month GMV. Above that, the conversion lift from headless typically pays for the migration in 6-9 months.
Will my plugins still work?+
Backend plugins yes (they continue running in Shopware). Theme-side / Twig-template plugins no — they need to be ported to React components. We scope this during discovery.
How does SEO survive a migration?+
Strict URL preservation, 301s for any structural changes, sitemap re-submission, schema parity. Typical traffic dip is 5-15% for 2-3 weeks; stabilizes higher than pre-migration once Core Web Vitals improve.
Can the Shopware admin still manage everything?+
Yes. Catalog, orders, customers, promotions all stay in the Shopware Admin. Marketing content moves to the headless CMS. Your team's daily ops barely change.
